Vivian Reddy, chairman and founder of the Edison Power Group, South Africa’s largest black owned power company, created the business over three and a half decades ago.
A true “rags to riches” story, he commenced his business career with a paltry sum of R500 and a borrowed bakkie. Against diverse adversities and chaLLenges, he grew it into one of South Africa’s most successful companies. Being continually motivated by many inspiring thoughts and philosophies, he surged ahead uninhibited.
At the age of 16, remembering his fortuitous encounter with iconic astronaut Neil Armstrong in Japan,Vivian Reddy will never forget the words that Armstrong shared with him, “Perseverance prevails when aLL else fails” and “If you can dream it, you can achieve it.” These words stuck with Reddy and formed a strong part of his early foundations. Reddy’s meteoric rise and magnanimous philanthropic contributions have earned untold accolades of praise, awards and worldly sentiments from recognised leaders, including President Nelson Mandela and President Bill Clinton. Although Edison Power remains the flagship of the business, Vivian Reddy has taken the opportunity to progress in areas of aLLied technology and the casino and property business. The Vivian Reddy Foundation has contributed tens of millions of Randstowards upLiftment programmes, education, cultural and religious organizations and other disadvantaged sectors.
Vivian Reddy never forgets his roots as he recalls the struggles of yesteryear. It is why, in addition to his weLL – recognised philanthropic disposition, he has established meaningful BEE solutions and has also made an inspiring input towards the economic Liberation of disadvantaged South Africans. Despite his national and worldly acclaim, Vivian Reddy remains a man of simple grace, a generous philanthropist, changing Africa – a true son of South Africa.
